For you, braking is simple. You press the sole of your foot against the brake pedal, and your vehicle's wheels slow and eventually stop. How that works behind the scenes is a bit more complicated, though.

How Brake Systems Work

It begins with the master brake cylinder directing brake fluid though a series of brake hoses and lines as a response to your pressing the brake pedal. When the fluid reaches the brake calipers, they close brake pads onto the brake rotors. That results in the friction, or resistance, needed to slow the rotation of your wheels. Some models, however, may have a drum brake system instead. In that case, the fluid forces a brake shoe to clamp onto the brake drum at each wheel.

Eventually, though, your brake system will start to falter. Driving conditions can accelerate the problem, but even age can lead to failure. When that happens, you need to replace the bad brake component as soon as possible to ensure safe driving.

How to Spot Failing Brakes

Signs of trouble include:

• Dashboard warning light comes on
• Abnormal noises
• Your vehicle shudders when you brake
• Softer than normal brake pedal
• Taking longer to stop
