Whether you drive a pickup, van, SUV, or sedan, your vehicle needs ignition in order to start. That comes about in a process known as "spark ignition," which is delivered thanks to your factory spark plugs.

What Spark Plugs Do

When you either turn the ignition key or press the "Start" button, the ignition switch, battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil all work to produce a small electric charge. Your spark plugs fire that charge across the gap between two leads, leading to combustion.

If your vehicle has a diesel engine, though, it's equipped with glow plugs instead of spark plugs. They feature a heating element in the tip, which ignites the fine fuel mist that's sprayed into the engine cylinder.

Spot the Signs of Failing Spark Plugs

Unfortunately, it's not unheard of for spark plugs to begin to go bad. They may have become corroded, or that gap may have widened too far to generate the effective spark your engine needs. While some of the signs are similar to those of alternator failure, check your plugs first if you experience any of the following:

• Misfiring engine
• Difficulty starting your vehicle
• Rough engine idle
• The "Check Engine" dash light comes on
